Vesak is a significant and revered festival in Sri Lanka, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha. It is a time when the entire nation comes alive with vibrant decorations, illuminated streets, and beautifully crafted lanterns. The Preethi Vesak project aimed to involve the children of Singithi Sewana Children’s Home in this celebration, allowing them to experience the joy of creating their own Vesak lanterns.
On the designated day, the Rotaract Club of Kandy and the Interact Club of Hillwood College Kandy gathered at the Singithi Sewana Children’s Home, radiating enthusiasm and carrying all the necessary materials for the lantern-making activity. Under the guidance of dedicated volunteers, the children eagerly participated in the creative process, bringing their imaginations to life through colorful lantern designs. It was a sight to behold as laughter, and excitement filled the air, fostering a sense of unity and happiness.

The Preethi Vesak project showcased the power of collaboration and community involvement. The partnership between the Rotaract Club of Kandy and the Interact Club of Hillwood College Kandy exemplified the importance of working together towards a common goal. The project not only provided an opportunity for the children of Singithi Sewana Children’s Home to engage in a meaningful activity but also allowed volunteers to share their time, talents, and resources to create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Vesak is not only a time for celebration but also a time to reflect on the teachings of Lord Buddha, emphasizing love, kindness, and compassion. Through the Preethi Vesak project, the children at Singithi Sewana Children’s Home were not only exposed to the artistic aspect of Vesak but were also reminded of these valuable teachings. The lantern-making process served as a medium to instill these principles, fostering a sense of empathy, understanding, and unity among the participants.
The success of this initiative highlights the profound impact that small acts of kindness can have in brightening the lives of others and fostering a stronger sense of community. As we reflect on the Preethi Vesak project, we are reminded of the timeless teachings of Vesak, inspiring us to continue spreading love and compassion in our daily lives.
