The Rotaract Club of Kandy recently undertook a remarkable project called “Hearts for Paws” to create awareness about pet care, promote vaccinations, and provide essential support to stray dogs in need. This comprehensive initiative was divided into three phases: an online awareness session, a food distribution drive, and a vaccination campaign.

Phase 01: Online Awareness Session
The project commenced with an interactive and informative online awareness session conducted by Dr. Tharindi Madiwela, a distinguished BVSc lecturer at the University of Peradeniya. The session focused on educating the audience on how to take proper care of their pets, highlighting the significance of vaccinations, and providing insights into simple treatments to rescue and care for stray animals. Dr. Madiwela’s expertise and passion for animal welfare greatly contributed to the success of the session, empowering participants with knowledge and encouraging responsible pet ownership.

Phase 02: Food for Paws
Recognizing the urgent need for nutrition and care among feeble stray dogs, the Hearts of Paws project entered its second phase, “Food for Paws.” On the 4th of February, the Rotaract Club of Kandy organized a food distribution drive, generously providing over 10 kilograms of food to these vulnerable animals. This initiative aimed to alleviate hunger and malnutrition among stray dogs, ensuring their overall well-being and increasing their chances of survival. The club’s dedication and commitment to improving the lives of these animals were evident in this impactful phase of the project.

Phase 03: Stray Dog Vaccination Drive
Continuing its mission to enhance the welfare of stray dogs, the Rotaract Club of Kandy organized a vaccination drive for the third phase of the Hearts for Paws project: the “Stray Dog Vaccination Drive” on the 21st of May 2023. This campaign’s aim was to prevent and control rabies infections among stray dogs by providing accessible vaccines and promoting their widespread adoption. By vaccinating these dogs, the project strives to protect not only their lives but also the communities they interact with, ensuring a safer environment for both humans and animals.
The Hearts for Paws project, spearheaded by the Rotaract Club of Kandy, has made significant strides in improving the lives of stray dogs and promoting responsible pet ownership. From raising awareness about proper care and vaccinations to providing essential nutrition and vaccines, the project has demonstrated the power of collective efforts in making a positive impact.
