‘No other investment yields as great a return as the investment in education. An educated workforce is the foundation of every community and the future of every country’
-Brad Henry-
Children are the future of our country and they are going to be the leaders of tomorrow. Molding their skills and sending them in the right direction, is certainly the duty of the country. Sadly, the educational system of Sri Lanka is obvious to be falling apart with the current economic and political crisis. The free education policy of Sri Lanka has failed in providing children access to equal resources. A disparity exists between the underprivileged students and other students with access to modern online resources.
Realizing the importance of efforts taken to lessen the disparity, the Rotaract Club of Kandy initiated the project ‘E-අත්වැල’ a rebranded version of last year’s project ‘Sewana’. The project ‘E-අත්වැල’ is one of the signature projects initiated under Community Service Avenue with the aim of providing e-devices for a few students in underprivileged families.
Under the sponsorships of the leading companies in Sri Lanka, we were delighted to donate two iPads to two students from two different areas of the Central Province, who comes from underprivileged families. The first student resides in Kandy, who is partially disabled, as he underwent an accident a few years back and was bedridden for some time. He was found as a student with great determination on the fact that he faced his G.C.E Ordinary Level Examinations while being bedridden and passed the exams with colors. The second student is from Avissawella, who also preserves good skills in education despite the fact of being born to another underprivileged family, which is harshly affected by the instability of the country.
Although 2022, is a challenging year for us, we were successful in clearing the digital divide among the privileged and underprivileged students by commencing from a smaller unit. The initiation was yet another investment taken by the Rotaract Club of Kandy with the aim of enhancing the ‘basic education and literacy’ of the students in Sri Lanka.
Our team is hopeful that with more partners, the scope of project ‘E-අත්වැල’ can be enlarged to seven provinces of the country in the upcoming years as well.
