Sri Lanka is currently going through one of the most severe economic crises in its history, and its effects are being felt in every aspect of daily life. One of the most concerning impacts is on the education sector, with the prices of essential school items increasing by up to 140%.

For many families in Sri Lanka, the cost of sending their children to school is already a significant financial burden. The sudden spike in prices has made it even harder for them to afford the basic items required for their children’s education. This includes school uniforms, shoes, bags, books, and stationery, which are essential for students to be able to attend school and participate fully in their classes.

This situation has put many parents in an impossible position, as they struggle to balance their household budgets against the cost of their children’s education. For some families, this may mean making the difficult decision to keep their children out of school altogether, as they simply cannot afford the necessary expenses.

Rotaract Club of Kandy has always been at the forefront of community service projects, and their latest project, the Christmas gift box, is a testament to their dedication and compassion towards those in need. The club stepped up to help underprivileged kids who are struggling to afford basic school supplies.

On the 15th of January 2023, the project took place at Ketakandura Primary School, Walapane, where 41 students were provided with a complete pack of school supplies including shoes, a school bag, exercise books, and stationery. The project not only helped students who were already studying in the school but also students who were to be enrolled in the school in the upcoming new school year.

The project was a great success, and it was heartening to see the joy on the faces of the children who received the gift boxes. The club members were actively involved in the project, and their efforts were greatly appreciated by the school authorities, students, and their parents.

It is not just about providing the necessary school items, but it is also about showing these children that there are people who care about them and their education. The Christmas gift box project not only provides students with the tools to succeed in school but also motivates them to continue their education.

Rotaract Club of Kandy’s Christmas gift box project is a great example of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.
