Thai Pongal, aka Maattu Pongal is an important day for Hindus that falls every year. This day is celebrated to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai, which is considered an auspicious month.
The Rotaract Club of Kandy took the initiative to celebrate this festival by dressing in traditional attires and following up all the traditional proceedings for the day that is usually done the Hindus, at Rtr. Chavithra’s residence on the 22nd of January 2022. This event was initiated by the Club Service team.
The primary goal of this project was to educate all members of the Rotaract Club of Kandy of the proceedings and traditions of the Thai Pongal festival. Overall, the project was of immense success and portrayed the coexistence between diverse cultures and communities while raising awareness of the importance of coexisting within the society. Fellowship was strengthened within the club and we hope to celebrate this joyous festival in the coming years too.
